What Is a Facemask?
- Also called reverse-pull headgear or protraction headgear
- Used during early orthodontic intervention to help guide the growth of the upper jaw
- Often recommended for children with an underbite or a deficient upper jaw
- Uses gentle pressure to encourage the upper jaw and teeth to move forward into a healthier position relative to the lower jaw
How to Wear Your Orthodontic Facemask
- The facemask has a forehead pad, chin pad, and metal frame; small orthodontic elastics connect it to the appliance inside the mouth
- Place the facemask as instructed
- Position the chin and forehead pads comfortably against the face
- Attach the elastics exactly where your orthodontist showed you — do not change the position, size, or number of elastics unless instructed
- Wear the facemask for the prescribed number of hours each day; consistent wear is essential to achieving skeletal changes
- Replace elastics as directed — elastics lose strength with use
When Should My Child Wear the Facemask?
- Most children wear the facemask at home, including during the evening and while sleeping
- Your orthodontist will provide a specific wear schedule based on your child’s treatment needs
- Most wear times range from 12–16 hours per day
What to Expect
- It is normal for the teeth, jaw, chin, or forehead to feel a little sore or tender at first
- Discomfort usually improves as your child becomes accustomed to the appliance
- The facemask should feel secure but should not cause significant pain or persistent irritation
- If the chin or forehead pads are rubbing the skin or your child has unusual discomfort, contact our office
Facemask Safety & Care
- Do not wear the facemask while playing sports, running, roughhousing, or during other active play
- Always remove the elastics before removing the facemask
- Keep the facemask clean and store it in a safe place when it is not being worn
- Do not bend or adjust the metal frame at home
- Never double the elastics or use a different size elastic unless instructed by your orthodontist
- Bring the facemask to every orthodontic appointment
- If the facemask becomes damaged, stops fitting properly, or comes off unexpectedly during sleep, stop wearing it and contact our office
Helping Your Child Stay on Track
- Developing a routine makes facemask wear much easier
- Many families make facemask time part of the normal evening routine, putting it on after homework, dinner, and brushing
- Every hour of prescribed wear helps your child make progress toward a healthier bite and smile
